7 Best Wabi Sabi Interior Styling Tips For A Calm Happy Home

Have You Heard Of Wabi Sabi ?

Little did I realise thatI actually had seen many many interior schemes with this exact style floating around on the socials. They tend to have the same theme of softness, organic with a focus on texture + natural products. After I bit more research I realised that is equally a style as well as a philosophy, which pricked my ears because I am a lover of a good backstory (SIde note currently watching SEE on Apple Tv...epic backstory)‘ Less House

What Is Wabi Sabi

On the surface it appeared to be a mysterious topic with no actual depth. I couldn't have been more wrong as I quickly discovered that the aesthetic ( aka good looking) philosophy sits deeply within Japanese culture.

Wabi Sabi’s whole purpose is to bring everything back to its original roots, to nature and to embrace a sense of peace in all areas of life.

Humans today often think the bigger + more spectacular something is than the more valuable it is. This movement is the complete opposite. It sits quietly + encourages anyone who embraces the style to find the beauty in the less obvious things, the simpler things of life, that generally get overlooked

What Does The Word Mean ?

Wabi | ‘ wretched,  miserable and lonely’

Sabi | “that show an aging quality’

The two words separately may not make much sense but when you place them together they bring a sense of the contrast of beauty, nature and what comes with accepting imperfections.

Think of Items such as metals how they turn a nice rusty colour once they've been left out to the elements. The more worn, matured or tarnished an item the more Sabi it is. Embracing the Wabi SAbi style + incorporating it into your interiors decoration project would be to turn to nature for inspo and embracin the uniques quality of natural worldly items

Get The Wabi Sabi Look

The way that you can get wabi sabi into your home. is by incorporating natural materials such as linen, rustic timber, natural stones and natural Fabrics.

This style definitely doesn't go for Contemporary materials such as high gloss finishes and anything that looks rigid.  When choosing pieces for a look in this style think about anything in nature, the more organic shapes, textures and tones, the more wabi sabi it is. Worn timber pieces, used Indian Rice Bowls + handmade ceramics all have a place. Earthy, free flowing fabrics like Linen are also a hit, its no wonder Linen Sheet + Quilt Covers are big at the moment.

This doesn't restrict you to a certain colour palette either, as you can see below wabi sabi has the potential to be dark + moody as well. As long s you decorate from the heart, you should be sitting well within this style

The less is more approach

Remember when everyone went crazy for Marie kondo talking about the things that she loved on Netflix ?

Sort of the same for this style, it's really important to think about placing value on the things that you really love. Western Cultures centre around more more more, while Wabi Sabi encourages humans to come back to what really matters.

It encourages you to think about the homewares and furniture that you buy, making sure they evoke a sense of happiness (aka joy ) and they will be used for a long time. Not the cheap Kmart lamp that might break in 4 months, but the handmade ceramic one that looks like a piece of sculpture and has a sense of warmth about it.

Decluttering your current homewares + decor is a great way to start. With spring here in Australia there is no better time to start.

Bring Peace, Joy + Calm

Decluttering your current homewares + decor is a great way to start. With spring here in Australia there is no better time to start. Surround yourself with the things that bring you joy, happiness + peace, so you can start to radiate that feeling throughout your whole home.

The reason for starting my interior decoration business was the joy it brings me when a simple refresh or transform of a space can bring so much joy + harmony to a household. The FEELING we create seems to bounce off all the humans that live there for the better, when things are organised and in their place, and everyones loves the new at home experience, it generally brings good vibes. That’s the most important thing to me. The Quickest Way To Get The Wabi Sabi Look

The easiest way to incorporate this style into your house is to go on a journey with indoor plants. Nature is the absolute centre point of this style so it makes sense to include plants to reflect that and bring the outdoors in.

Keeping with the minimal style of wabi sabi it would be ideal to only have a few plants in pots that you really love. Some popular indoor plants at the moment are monstera, devil's ivy and mother in-laws tongue. Not only do they pack a punch with home decor styling they were also help you to tap into the natural side of Wabi Sabi.

I love the love as much as anyone else, feel welcome to share on the socials below. Thanks
